Androgenetic alopecia also known as male pattern hair loss occurs in 4 out of 5 men and can begin as early as the teenage years. While no two hair loss cases are alike, we've seen patterns emerge over time that reveal how genes, hormones, nutrition and age can all contribute to the issue.

• Male pattern baldness (MPB) is genetic in men, meaning it is determined by genetic traits that the male has inherited from previous generations. And although we naturally relate age to hair loss, it is our genetic sensitivity to DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which begins the process of hair loss.
• Testosterone is the main male hormone and when it is combined with the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, it produces DHT. The DHT then binds to receptors in scalp follicles, which signal the hair follicles to miniaturize (or shrink), stop growing and then eventually die. By blocking the damaging effects of the DHT on hair follicles, we can begin to normalize the hair cycles by extending the growth cycle and slowing the process of hair miniaturization. 
• DHT is but only one factor, and we must also consider the importance of nutrition in order for hair follicles to grow and function properly. Without the proper nutrients, the growth cycle of the hair can be disrupted and/or hair can become weak.
